Romain: I am the General Manager and Chief Creative Officer at Amplitude Studios. What is your job title at Amplitude Studios and what does your job entail? I spoke with Waubert over Google Meet about how he got into the game industry, the impact of the first Star Wars mods for Battlefield, and how Humankind has been a design milestone for his team and the community, among other things.ĭoug: Hi Romain, how’s it going? With Humankind (nominated for Best Sim/Strategy Game at The Game Awards 2021), Amplitude evolved its 4X ideas, building an entirely new universe, and built in more mod capabilities for its growing player base. Within a seven-year span, Amplitude jump-started the staid Civ-dominated 4X space (4X = explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) with creative ideas and unique takes across four titles - Endless Space, Dungeon of the Endless (a rogue-lite), Endless Legend, and Endless Space 2.Īmplitude attracted publisher Sega, which was building a new European-based strategy division in 2016, and joined Sega’s trio of top-rated dev teams including Creative Assembly ( Total War) and Relic Entertainment ( Age of Empires, Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40,000).

As he became more driven to re-shape his favorite game with different maps and ideas, it became evident that Waubert didn’t just want to make maps in his spare time, he wanted to do it full time.Īfter working on the original Battlefield: 1942 at Electronic Arts and iconic turn-based series such as Might and Magic at Ubisoft, Waubert and trusted colleague Mathieu Girard started Amplitude Studios.

At the time, however, mod tools barely existed: all of Waubert’s map creations were hand-drawn with pen on paper. One of the first games Romain de Waubert - General Manager and Chief Creative Officer at Amplitude (which makes the moddable Humankind ) - ever modded was the first Sid Meier’s Civilization.
